HOW TO PREVENT YOUR ORIENTAL RUG FROM DAMAGE?
Now that Christmas and New Year is around, everybody is looking to spruce up their home and has started the preparations in advance. In this festive season, people love to clean their homes from ceiling to ground. The flooring is important of all either its carpets or rugs as there are number of ways your oriental rugs can sustain damage. Let’s study how this wear and tear happens and what is the solution for that.
Damage by Sunlight: Most of the rug dyes are resistant to sun fading but being a powerful source of nature, ultraviolet rays surely affect the rug over a time laid in the sunny area. Therefore, avoid placing your oriental rugs in the direct sunlight and try to turn the rug twice a year to even out possible color fading.
Uneven Wear: An oriental rug should be turned twice a year to even out wear and color fading. Never place a rug on very uneven floor, especially on the raised floor as it causes the wear much more quickly to the part of the rug which covers that area than the other parts of the area rug.
While you move a rug: When you want to adjust the position of an area rug by turning it, you hold the rug from the edge or fringes with brute force which may damage it. So, it is better to roll up the whole rug from the short end to carry it easily to the other place. On the other hand, if you want to store the “Oriental Rug“ then make sure to get it cleaned professionally before wrapping up because in that case, it will be more susceptible to moth infestation.
To lay a rug flat: If a rug has been folded up for shipping, it may get wrinkles when you lay it down. Therefore, before you flatten them out, determine which way the nap lays. Stand at the side of the rug with the nap running towards your feet. Now roll the rug up, then unroll and smooth it downside. If still the creases persist, then call the professional rug repairers or restoration expert.
If the wrinkles remained unattended for long period then it can result in lasting damage. Sometimes, rugs have in-built wrinkles at the time of rug is woven. Hence, try to avoid the one of these rugs as it damages the elegance and beauty of the décor piece.
Rug Pads: They help to extend the life of your rug as they can prevent the area rugs from sliding, tripping on the edges, from wrinkling as well as provide comfort under foot. Moreover, rug pads also help with sound reduction. A pad should be an inch smaller than the rug so that it will not show beneath your “Area Rug“. It should be made of materials such as rubber or polyester for better results.
At the end, we hope these above mentioned tips and tricks will help you to prevent wear and tear from damaging your prized possession i.e. Oriental rug prematurely.
